Looking for a "no negative space" font - aka, open counters for A B D O P Q R a b d e g o p q

Jun 10, 2015 at 13:22

I realize that there are "STENCIL" fonts that would do what I am looking for, however, every stencil font I've seen looks like a stencil...that is, they look ugly. I am looking for fonts with open counters, meaning, no negative space. The letters which present the problem are A B D O P Q R a b d e g o p q These all have "closed counters". Thanks.

What type are you looking for? Serif? Sans serif? Bold? Book? Light?

My 2 penneth; Blue Island

But as the Kat says, it would be helpful to know what you are looking for…

I am looking for something traditional, professional, clean...nothing crazy silly looking. The Blue Island is in the ball-park. But one strike against Blue Island is that the ZERO has a closed counter.

Interesting design, but how about readability?

No serifs. Nothing blockish. I will be using the font with a paper/laser cutter and the serifs would make things difficult at small sizes.

Vanitas is not bad, but I really don't want a "stenciled" version of a letter when it is not necessary. IOW, Vanitas unnecessarily breaks letters such as C E F Y into 2 parts (elements).

Whichever font you may encounter, I'm afraid no-one will exactly meet your needs. When you like the Vanitas Stencil (which I do) you will still have to close some openings. A font with a similar style is the Cotoris, which font already has most of the features you need. Still needs some work though ... if you get permission from Ryoichi Tsunekawa / Flat-it at all that is.

Cotoris is very, very nice, but it unfortunately has several closed counters. Thanks for your help, though.

It still needs some work I wrote. I did a quick and dirty check and it seems only the 4, A the O, Q and o need little ... very little ... work.
Do you always give up that easy?

Like most folks, I look for the low hanging fruit first. If necessary, I'll fetch a ladder.
