Actually it's 1898, duh!

World Gothic Condensed was originally Topic (No5), show by Barnhart Brothers & Spindler in 1897.
It has been credited to Robert Wiebking.

Nesdon, I know this isn't the font you're looking for, but here is another one that was used for newspaper headlines :

Globe Gothic (Taylor Gothic & Quentell) est un meilleur choix car on reste dans la même époque.

Wow, this is my first post on this forum, even tho I am a bit of a typography nerd, and I was stunned to see Claude exactly nail it within just a couple of hours. Thank you all so much! I ended up using Engebrechtre and FoglihtenNo01, which I found here on DaFont. It was for a newspaper for a scene from Citizen Kane ("Dear Wheeler - You provide the prose poems - I'll provide the war") in a film class I teach. BTW the newspaper archive (http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/) in the newly revamped Library of Congress website is amazing.

I actually downloaded that one yesterday, as it was condensed most closely to the World Gothic, but found the sans serif quality of the Engbrechtre matched better. Here is what we made. The "Enemy Armada of the Jersey Coast is a line of dialogue read from the paper at the beginning of the scene. http://www.terrakino.net/sample.png

I'm curious, how do you post an image here in the forum? I tried using an <img src.../> tag but it didn't show in the preview.
